At this time of year, the natural world presents a magical opportunity to explore the meaning of change and transformation. Living in Ontario, the autumn colours remind me that it’s time to pull out my woolen socks, hit the hiking trails, and take one last plunge in the lake before the frost sets in. Perhaps more than any other time of year, I am in awe of the magic of the changing season and draw inspiration from it.
- How does this season inspire you?
- What does it signal about the changes you are contemplating?
- What new path do you want to explore?
On a more practical note, I also make a lot of lists at this time of year to capture the things I want to get done before year end. My lists usually include home projects, people I want to see, a quarterly business check up, and something new I want to learn. I like to think of it as my back-to-school instinct kicking into gear.

In his book Transitions, Making Sense of Life’s Changes, William Bridges captures the essential difference between change and transition. Change is situational. It can be described as the external circumstances that alter how you live, work or play. Transformational change on the other hand impacts us in a deeper internal way. While it may be prompted by external circumstances, like a job loss, move, illness or break up, the inner work of transformation takes time and results in a shift in how you define yourself in relation to your new circumstances.
Consider what you already know about making transitions.
- When have you been through a transformative change in the past?
- What was the biggest lesson learned?
