Change is hard. More than ever we are constantly reminded of this. Our capacity to respond and to grow through change is challenged daily. It’s hard to imagine embracing change, especially these days when things feel so out of control.

But what if change is exactly what you need right now to find more meaning and enjoy your life? What if you take that courageous career move you’ve been contemplating or head back to school or start your own business? What if this is the season for you to reinvent yourself?

As we turn the page on summer and enter a new season, the signs of change are everywhere. We may be fatigued by the constant change around us. But there is something comforting about seasonal changes. In Canada, they happen, whether we are ready or not. On my morning run I noticed shades of red beginning to show on the maple. I’ve pulled out my sweaters and boots for evening walks. Seeing kids in the playground back at school across from my house brought a smile to my face.

These simple signs of the fall season remind me of the universal rhythms of change. The seasons change. Life carries one. What if you paused to acknowledge and appreciate it? Look around you and consider these question:

  • What changes do you see that you are you grateful for?
  • What is the hardest change you are facing?
  • How can you find a way to ease into that change and perhaps even embrace it?

Embracing change takes courage, connection and commitment. It’s hard to go through it alone.

This Friday is also the start of the Jewish New Year. Normally it is a time for those of us who celebrate it to participate in community prayer and self-reflection. This year, our community gatherings will be mostly limited to virtual platforms. I will miss the communal singing. But I am ready to embrace the changes that are coming and to renew my commitment to supporting others to do the same.

One of my favourite rituals of the holiday is the dipping of apples in honey. We do this as a symbol for starting a sweet year. Whatever faith or community you belong to, may the sweetness of the fall season inspire you to embrace change, connect with others and find your purpose.

“To everything turn, turn, turn
There is a season turn, turn, turn
And a time to every purpose
Under heaven” – Pete Seeger*
*To Everything There Is a Season, was written by Pete Seeger in the late 1950s and turned into a hit in the 60s by the Byrds. I found this live recording by Judy Collings especially moving.
